CALL FOR PAPERS
      2008 ASA Mini-Conference
      on Race, Labor and Empire

      Northeastern University
      O'Bryant African-American Institute
40 Leon St., Boston, MA, 02115

The Labor and Labor Movements Section of the American Sociological Association and the Association of Black Sociologists are pleased to announce a Miniconference, entitled Race, Labor, and Empire, that they are jointly organizing concurrently with the ASA Meetings in Boston, on August 1 and 2, 2008. The Miniconference is co-sponsored by the Department of Sociology and Anthropology of Northeastern University, and the following ASA Sections: Section on Asia and Asian America, Section on Latino/Latina Sociology, Section on Marxist Sociology, Section on Race, Gender and Class, Section on Racial and Ethnic Minorities, and Section on Political Economy of the World System.

The Program Schedule presents the theme of the Miniconference, and the planned session topics and their organizers. Most of the sessions will depend on invited speakers, both academics and activists, but three of the sessions are partially open for submissions. These three are:

        1) Comparative Racial Capitalisms: Historical and Contemporary Perspectives on How Race Matters for Global Capital. Organizers: Ching Kwan Lee (chinglee@umich.edu) and Steve McKay (smckay@ucsc.edu)

        2) Beyond Union Organizing: Mobilizing around Race and Labor. Organizers: Rachel Meyer (rmeyer@umich.edu) and Anna Guevara (guevarra@uic.edu)

        3) Racializing Capitalism: Gender, Sexuality and the Politics of Labor. Organizers: Jennifer Chun (jjchun@interchange.ubc.ca) and Robyn Rodriguez (robyn.m.rodriguez@rutgers.edu)

For full descriptions of the panel topics, see the Program Schedule.

We welcome paper submissions on these three topics, and on any topics related to the general theme of the Miniconference. We have arranged that the ASA Labor and Labor Movements Section expand its Round Tables to include strong papers that could not be included in the Miniconference, but will expand an interest in this important topic.

The Miniconference Planning Committee has established a Publications Subcommittee that will collect and consider all the papers that have been submitted to the conference, even if there was not enough space for them to be presented at the Miniconference, for publication as a book, a special issue of a journal, or both.

Please submit either a completed paper or an Abstract of a minimum of 300 words to the relevant session organizers if your topic fits within their subject matter. In sessions where there are two organizers, please submit your papers/abstracts to both. If you wish to submit a paper on the broader Miniconference theme, but it does not fit into any of the three open sessions, please submit your paper to Barry Eidlin (eidlin@berkeley.edu) for inclusion in the Section Round Tables. Papers or abstracts are due March 1, 2008. If submitting an abstract, a completed paper must be sent to the session organizer(s) by (June 30, 2008).
