Research Assistant/Data Technician
"Race and Labour in the Cane Fields:
Documenting the Louisiana Sugar Economy."
Wanted: Research Assistant/Data Technician (based at the University of Sussex, Brighton, UK) to work on research project
"Race and Labour in the Cane Fields: Documenting the Louisiana Sugar Economy." The project is a collaborative endeavour
between Dr. Richard Follett (University of Sussex) and Dr. Rick Halpern (University of Toronto) and is supported by research
grants from the Arts and Humanities Research Board, UK and the Canadian SSHRC. "Race and Labour in the Cane Fields"
examines the economic growth and performance of the Louisiana sugar economy from 1845 to the First World War, paying
particular attention to labour. The project commenced in 1999 with a pilot study of three sugar-producing parishes during the
late antebellum period, though recent grant awards will enable the project to move ahead over the next four years,
incorporating data from all twenty- three sugar cultivating parishes in Louisiana. Supplementary statistical information
pertaining to labour, land tenure, property-ownership, and capitalization will be incorporated. The grants will fund research
assistants/data technicians, the development of dedicated software, travel for research, and an end of project conference. The

We wish to appoint a research assistant/data technician to work on the project (at Sussex) for two days a week from October
2003-October 2005 and one day a week from October 2005-October 2006. Although all appropriate training will be included,
the appointee must be competent in utilizing computerized databases and be conscientious in collating and entering data. The
appointee will utilize specially-designed project software, a digital microfilm scanner, annual plantation records, and the
United States manuscript census. He/She will work closely with Follett and Halpern and liase with project-based colleagues
in Toronto.
The successful applicant will be appointed on the UK Universities Clerical Related 3 wage-scale (up to œ14,148 per
annum pro rata, plus NI and USS). Postgraduate students, who are either beginning MA/M.Phil or Ph.D work are especially
encouraged to contact Richard Follett as are potential graduate students who seek to conduct a D.Phil in any area of American
History at the University of Sussex. The post of research assistant is particularly suitable for those who seek to fund their
graduate studies and workload can be adapted as appropriate.
