POSITION ANNOUNCEMENTS
The Centre for Civil Society is a national research and training institute, hosted by the University of Natal. The Centre is
dedicated to the study of the non-profit sector. Its primary purpose is to enhance our understanding of civil society, in South
Africa and elsewhere, by building a critical mass of literature on the sector. As a result of significant growth, including
particularly rapid expansion in its research programmes, the Centre would like to invite applications for the following new
contract positions:
Research Director (Ref No.: D86/2002)
This is a senior academic post involving high-level research and teaching. The successful applicant who should have a
significant research record, will participate in and manage a number of the Centre's key research programmes. An integral
part of her/his duties will be teaching at the Masters level and supervising the research of a number of postgraduate students.
In addition, s/he will also share in the managerial duties of the centre. These will include supervision of project staff, day to
day administration of the Centre, communication and networking with a variety of stakeholders, and fundraising.
Three Senior Research Fellows/ Research Fellows (Ref No.: D 87/2002)
Successful applicants will be attached to one or both of two new research projects on social-giving and contemporary social
movements. Two of the successful applicants will be appointed as research co-ordinators with the responsibility of serving
as researchers on, and taking care of the day-to-day administration of, these projects. The third successful applicant will be
deployed as a researcher on both projects and will assist both research coordinators in fulfilling their responsibilities.
Programme Manager: Civil Society and African Integration (Ref No.: D88/2002)
The successful applicant will be responsible for establishing and managing research networks on the African continent that
will work collaboratively to develop a critical mass of literature on civil society and African integration. We are looking for
an African scholar, who has a doctorate or is close to completing it, has studied and worked in the fields of civil society and
development, and has contacts with established research networks on the continent. The successful applicant should be able
to easily interact and communicate with scholars from, at least, the Anglophone and Francophone parts of the continent.
CCS is committed to meeting the University of Natal's employment equity plans and, as a result, preference may be given

and appointments will be made as per the procedures and conditions of service of the University of Natal. The exact academic
status and salary of these positions is negotiable and will be dependent on the experience, commitment, qualifications and
publication record of the successful applicant.
