Social Sciences Department
Purdue University North Central
POSITION ANNOUNCEMENT
We have a tenure track position in sociology open here at Purdue University North Central (PNC) in Westville, Indiana.
(We're about 1/2 way between Gary and South Bend, just off the Indiana Toll Road and about 6 miles south of Michigan
City on US Hwy 421.)
PNC is a regional campus of Purdue. It's quite small--about 3500 students--but is a four year institution. It's a teaching
school--4/4 course load regularly, plus can teach in summer if you choose--but what makes it special is that there is a high
degree of student-faculty interaction. Not only that, but most people here--including staff and faculty--seem to really care
about our students.
Sociology has three full-time faculty, plus visiting assistant professors and adjuncts. We are in a multi-disciplinary social
science department, along with psychology, social work, political science, history and philosophy. In general, a very
congenial department that is pretty progressive overall. While we don't have a Soc major yet, we are definitely working
to build one. Our department offers a Bachelors in Liberal Studies and a Behavioral Arts and Sciences, which is a
combination of Soc, Psych and Social Work. The BLS is the largest major on campus.
As the enclosed announcement points out, we currently have an opening (which has not been publicized well,
unfortunately). However, they MUST have PhD in hand. If you could pass this on to recent PhDs who may be interested
in a teaching situation, I would appreciate it. Should they have questions, they should contact our department.
