POSITION ANNOUNCEMENT
Labor Education: Specialist
The Labor Education Program (LEP) at the University of Arkansas at Little Rock (UALR) invites applicants for the position
of Labor Education Specialist (job #390), which is non-tenure track, full time.
LEP provides research, educational services and training programs for labor organizations and workers. Programs are
conducted for local unions, central labor councils, the Arkansas AFL-CIO, and international unions at the regional or district
level. LEP provides training in traditional areas, such as steward training, collective bargaining, arbitration, labor and
employment law, effective leadership, and workplace safety and health. In addition, several multi-day, special topic
seminars are held each year which draw participants from Arkansas and surrounding states. LEP also develops specific
programs in response to needs expressed by client unions and various community organizations. LEP also houses the
Workplace Skills Enhancement Program (WSEP). The purpose of WSEP is to provide information, resources, and services
that will assist in providing the training necessary to equip workers to participate in today's global economy. The program
is structured to help working men and women acquire the foundation skills and knowledge essential to achieve their
occupational goals and to perform effectively on the job.
LEP is a unit within the Institute for Economic Advancement, in the College of Business.
Responsibilities: Developing course curriculum and materials and teaching non credit courses for union members;
coordinating and teaching in statewide conferences; marketing and recruiting for LEP classes; providing technical assistance
and research for unions; developing and securing funding for research proposals; and maintaining a working relationship
with the state AFL CIO, local central bodies, local unions and other national and intermediate bodies. Must be able to teach
courses in the core areas of steward training, collective bargaining, arbitration, and effective leadership. Travel
required.
Qualifications: Master's degree in industrial relations or related field, and union or labor education experience. Expertise
in one or more of the following areas is desired: worker participation and new work systems; labor and employment law;
new electronic communication methods for unions; and community outreach. Fluency in Spanish a plus. Research, grant
writing, and materials development skills required. An ability to relate to working people and organized labor, and a genuine
commitment to the labor movement is also required. Salary: Negotiable, depending on experience and qualifications. The
