50 Year Anniversary of the Labor-Management Reporting and Disclosure Act
We are approaching the 50 year anniversary of efforts to regulate the internal affairs of unions through the
Labor-Management Reporting and Disclosure Act 1959. This remarkable legislation was the culmination of congressional
hearings into union corruption and signaled growing concern with the internal operation of unions in the United States. The
Journal of Labor Research plans to mark the occasion with a retrospective and prospective symposium of papers examining
issues related to this regulation. The symposium papers will be included in Volume 30 in 2009.
The Editors would like to receive papers exploring one or more of the following themes:
- Origins of the 1959 Act, and subsequent evolution of internal union regulation.
- The impact of the legislation on union democracy.
- Internal union elections.
- Union members' rights under the LMRDA.
- Union finances.
- Financial corruption within unions.
This list of themes is not exhaustive. Authors are free to submit manuscripts on any topic related to regulation under the
Labor-Management Reporting and Disclosure Act. Articles are invited across all disciplines that contribute to the study of
industrial relations and which are routinely covered in the Journal of Labor Research, including economics, history, law,
sociology, and political science.
Papers should be submitted for consideration by editors by September 30, 2008. Please send full versions of papers
to Timothy Chandler, Associate Editor: JLRecon@lsu.edu as an attachment. Papers should conform to the stylistic
requirements of the Journal of Labor Research.
