Short Courses & Workshops

Designed for union leaders, staff and activists, these courses and workshops present union skills in a concentrated format. Taught by instructors with first-hand experience in labor relations, courses are offered in a variety of formats and lengths. Workshops run two to three hours in length. Case histories, simulations, and up-to-date materials give participants the chance to learn new skills and refine old ones.

The courses listed below are offered one or more times a year, depending on schedules and enrollment. Classes meet in the morning and evening, are held at the Wayne State campus unless otherwise noted. Saturday Training Series

 

PARLIAMENTARY PROCEDURE

This introductory class is designed for those who want to learn the basics of parliamentary procedure. Fee: $35 (Box lunch will be provided.)

UNIONS AND THE INTERNET

This two-session class is for union advocates who want to help build their union through effective use of Internet tools and resources. Both sessions will be taught in computer lab. Fee $35 each session (Box lunch provided each day.)

The first session will review effective communication over the Internet, including analysis of union web sites and other "cyber-communication" methods.

  • Evaluate what makes for a good union web site
  • Review how unions use the Internet effectively

The second session with focus on how to locate and use needed information on labor, government, business, and university web sites.

  • Resources for bargaining & grievance handling
  • Research your employer & the political scene

COLLECTIVE BARGAINING

Whether you are a union negotiator or simply want a better understanding of this important process, this two-session class provides practical skills and knowledge related to contract negotiations. You must attend both sessions. Fee: $70 (Box lunch provided each day.)

ADVANCED NEGOTIATION SKILLS:
COSTING-OUT THE CONTRACT

Union negotiators must be able to estimate the cost of any proposed change to the collective bargaining agreement. This class will show you how. Fee: $35 Box lunch provided.

  • Calculate total cost of wages
  • Compare changes benefit proposals
  • Evaluate roll-up costs
  • Calculate the cents-per-hour of proposals

ADVANCED NEGOTIATION SKILLS:

INTEREST-BASED BARGAINING AND CONTRACT CAMPAIGNS

Union negotiators must be able to adapt their strategies to fit the needs of the day. This one-day class covers two ends of the spectrum: where labor and management focus on constructive negotiations and problem solving, and where the union uses rights and power strategies to get management to bargain constructively. Fee: $35 (Box lunch provided.)

Four to Seven Week Courses

A class may be closed if filled & may be canceled if enrollment is low, therefore to ensure your spot, please register at least 2-weeks before the beginning of the class.Cancellation fees will be charged to those who cancel after the 1st class.

 

Communicating with Members and the Public

This six-week class develops an understanding of how effective communication can strengthen the union. Students will produce different kinds of documents while practicing skills with each other. Fee: $60.

  • Prepare to work with the Press and the Media

YOUR RIGHTS UNDER FMLA

This workshop provides an overview of the Family and Medical Leave Act, including changes effective January 16, 2009. Fee: $15
