Leading the Union

Custom Training for Union Leaders and Staff

The courses below are designed to increase the leadership abilities and personal effectiveness of union leader and staff. They can all be customized to fit your specific needs. Elected Leadership

This course examines the role of local union elected leadership as leaders and activists in the labor movement. It develops the knowledge and skills necessary to effectively carry out elected-leader responsibilities ranging from basic leadership skills to the specific duties associated with a particular office. Specific topics will vary from year to year.

Union Staff Orientation

This course orients staff to their role in building the union and develops the key skills needed to do so. A variety of topics are covered, including the mission and development of the union, emerging issues impacting the union, recruiting activists, problem solving, and planning. Specific topics will vary from year to year.

Leadership Development

This course examines the nature of leadership and its critical role in building. the union. Participants develop a practical set of skills for use in their everyday leadership of than union. These include planning, problem solving, communicating effectively, building a team and leading volunteers.

Understanding Ourselves and Others

Utilizing the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator, this course will enable participants to .become aware of their personal strengths and weaknesses and the impact of their personal styles on others.

Valuing Diversity

This course increases awareness and understanding of diversity, the changing nature of the work force, barriers to cultural diversity, and policies and practices to ensure that all members are treated with respect and that diversity is valued as a strength.

Building Effective Teams

This course introduces participants to the conditions for effective teamwork, the process of group development, and group problem solving and decision making.

Public Speaking

This course enhances participants abilities to organize and express their views clearly, concisely and with confidence.

Effective Interpersonal Communication

This course introduces participants to the nature of the communication process and the skills of active listening, giving and receiving feedback, and dealing with emotion.

Managing Conflict

This course examines the nature and causes of conflict, conflict responses and the effective use of alternative conflict management strategies.

Effective Planning

This course introduces participants to the elements of effective planning, including creating a vision, clarifying the mission, setting goals and objectives, developing action plans and establishing evaluation measures.

Effective Meetings

This course examines the elements of effective meetings, including the types of meetings, preparation, managing meeting dynamics, follow up and evaluation.
